I do not have a serger. But my mom says I need one. She uses her's ALL the time! I came across this blog - and she totally makes me want to get a serger. http://dana-made-it.blogspot.com/ A lot of the kids clothes she makes have serged edges on the outside and it looks really cute!
So my vote is yes :}

I have a serger that I do not use ver often. I have problems with them staying calibrated. If it gets off caliber then you have to have it repaired before you can use it again. It will either bang or break the thread. When it is working good I enjoy it, but it has been frustrating.

Donna, you sound just like my mom does. She rarely uses hers and it gives her a lot of frustration. She said when she remembered how to use hers she could pick it up again no problem even with it's quirks but now she forgets. But on the plus side she said it's really fast and good for making kids clothes.

Thanks for the advice,ladies!

I've had my serger for over 10 years and I love it. I don't use it as much as I used to but they are nice to have. I think mine is a Juki brand. You might want to look for used ones at sewing machine repair shops. Some of those shops take trade in's when people buy new machines and then they sale the trade ins. Of course the newest ones are a lot fancier, but the old ones do the job.

Put it on your "would be nice to have but not completely necessary to have" list.

They do make the work go faster, but you need an advanced degree to operate the thing...I don't like it enough to justify stopping constantly (mine probably needs some time in the repair shop). I'm impatient with sewing, though -- you enjoy it way more than I do, so you may love it.
